Authorities in Southern California arrested an armed man at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes two days before President Donald Trump was scheduled to appear there for a Republican fundraising dinner. The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when plainclothes federal agents noticed a man walking across the golf course property. He was taking photographs and videos and seemed to be watching the security preparations already underway for the president’s visit.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies from the Lomita Station arrived quickly after the agents called in the report. They identified the man as 38 year old Jeanine John Taele of Downey. Deputies soon learned he was already the subject of an active robbery investigation by the El Segundo Police Department. While speaking with him they recovered a 16 round magazine loaded with hollow point ammunition from one of his pants pockets.
A search of his vehicle parked in the golf course lot turned up a loaded pistol with a round already in the chamber along with another loaded magazine containing the same type of ammunition. Taele was taken into custody on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition. The arrest raised immediate concerns because of the timing and location.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau who are assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force obtained a search warrant for Taele’s residence in Downey. On Monday they executed that warrant and recovered a larger collection of items. Among them was an illegally modified AR platform rifle a 1911 style 45 caliber pistol an AR platform upper receiver body armor high capacity magazines and bulk quantities of both pistol and rifle ammunition.
Investigators also found two radio signal devices and several notebooks that contained statements authorities later described as concerning. President Trump was already aboard Air Force One and heading toward California when news of the arrest became public. He was expected to speak at a Republican National Committee dinner held at the same golf club on Tuesday evening. The Secret Service opened a review to determine whether Taele had posed any specific threat to the president.
A federal law enforcement source said early assessments found no clear evidence of a plot aimed at Trump though the investigation remains active and additional charges could still be filed. Officials stated publicly that they had identified no credible threat to the surrounding communities. Taele was booked and held on substantial bail. Court records showed a preliminary hearing scheduled for later in the month.
His dual status as a robbery suspect and the person found with firearms near a presidential event site added complexity to the case. Investigators have not released the full contents of the notebooks or any detailed motive. The combination of weapons body armor radio equipment and the act of photographing security arrangements prompted the joint response from local deputies the FBI task force and the Secret Service. Trump National Golf Club sits in the coastal hills of Rancho Palos Verdes south of Los Angeles.
The property has hosted political events before and security is routinely tightened when the president is expected. Federal agents had already begun advance work when Taele appeared on the grounds. Their decision to report him as suspicious and the rapid follow up by sheriff’s deputies prevented any further activity at the site. The subsequent home search revealed the extent of the materials in his possession and reinforced the decision to treat the matter as a potential security concern.
As of Tuesday the case continued under joint investigation. No additional arrests had been announced and authorities emphasized that the public faced no ongoing danger. The episode nevertheless illustrated the layers of protective work that surround every presidential visit to private property. Local officers federal agents and specialized task forces coordinated within hours to secure the location and examine the evidence.
Taele remains in custody while prosecutors and investigators sort through the firearms the ammunition and the written material recovered from his home.
