A Florham Park police officer has been charged with second degree aggravated assault, fourth degree stalking, harassment, and criminal trespass after a department dispatcher told investigators that he came to her Roseland residence after she blocked him and applied pressure to her neck until she lost consciousness. Gregory M. Dietz, 34, of Flanders, is a patrol officer with the Florham Park Police Department. Public records show he was sworn in on February 1, 2019, and that his salary was listed at more than $103,000.

The charges remain allegations. Dietz has not been convicted, and his attorney says he denies the claims. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by news organizations through public records, the woman began working as a Florham Park police dispatcher in June 2025 and met Dietz after she started the job. She described the two as friends.

Investigators wrote that Dietz sent multiple messages she considered inappropriate and that he wanted a romantic relationship. A Roseland officer wrote in an arrest report that Dietz wanted to be in a relationship with her. The affidavit states that in November 2025 Dietz touched the woman on her bottom without her consent and made her sit on his lap. She told police he continued texting her and asking her out, which she said caused annoyance and alarm.

On July 5, 2026, she told him never to contact her again and blocked him on phone messaging, Instagram, and email, the affidavit says. A short time later, investigators allege, Dietz appeared at her apartment building on Becker Farm Road in Roseland and entered the building even though he did not have an access card. He knocked on her door. The woman told investigators she let him inside so she could end the friendship in person.

Once inside, Dietz allegedly tried to kiss her. When she turned her head away, the affidavit says he slapped her in the face, grabbed her with both hands, and applied pressure to her neck, causing her to black out. Investigators later documented hand marks and swelling on her neck. The woman told police she had no contact with Dietz after the alleged assault until she saw him on July 18, 2026.

She said that encounter caused emotional distress, and she then reported the earlier incidents. The affidavit states that the Florham Park Police Department was made aware of the allegations, conducted what the document called a thorough investigation, and then notified the Roseland Police Department. Court records show Dietz was charged on July 19. Roseland police arrested him at 10:16 a.m. on July 20 on an active warrant.

He was taken to the Essex County Jail and held for four days. Court records show he was released on July 24 after a prosecutor’s request for pretrial detention was denied. Court records further show the case was referred to a grand jury on August 24. Florham Park Police Chief Karl E.

Svenningsen initially declined to discuss the matter, saying it was an ongoing investigation. On September 11 he told local reporters that Dietz has been suspended without pay since the date of his arrest. The department website still listed Dietz as a patrol officer earlier that week. A spokesperson for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said the office could neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation.

Dietz is represented by attorney Marco A. Laracca of Bio and Laracca P.C. in Orange. In a written statement, Laracca said: “My client unequivocally and vehemently denies these allegations. The accuser’s account is a fabrication; a series of malicious and demonstrably false claims.

We are certain that the truth will be fully exposed when Mr. Dietz has his day in court.” The woman has not been publicly identified. No trial date has been publicly reported.

The charges have not been proven in court.
