Early Saturday morning, two Philadelphia police officers from the 19th District answered a call that turned into a violent ambush on a West Philadelphia porch. One officer has died from his wounds. The second remains in critical condition. A 33 year old father of five was struck 12 times.
His 40 year old partner, a father of two, was hit three times. Together they absorbed 15 rounds in a sudden barrage of gunfire. Police received a report shortly after midnight of an armed man on a porch in the 100 block of North 52nd Street. Officers arrived around 12:50 a.m. and stepped onto the property.
Commissioner Kevin Bethel later described what followed as significant gunfire directed at the pair once they reached the porch. Additional officers responding to the scene found the two wounded men still on the porch. Both officers were rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for emergency surgery. Initial updates indicated they were both undergoing or recovering from operations.
Later Saturday morning, the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that one of the officers had died from his injuries. Officials have not publicly identified which officer was killed. The surviving officer continues to fight in critical condition. After the initial shooting, the gunman fled through a nearby alley and opened fire on additional officers who were closing in.
Those officers were not struck. SWAT teams and other units locked down the area and searched for the suspect. Officers eventually located him hiding in a tree. He was taken into custody without further injury to police.
Investigators recovered three firearms connected to the incident: two handguns and a shotgun. One of the handguns belonged to one of the wounded officers. How the suspect obtained that weapon remains under investigation. No official motive has been released.
Mayor Cherelle Parker addressed the shooting and met with the officers’ families. She described the pain those families are experiencing as unspeakable and emphasized the daily risks officers accept. Parker urged the public to pray for the wounded officers and their loved ones. Bethel spoke of his pride in the men and women of the department who repeatedly enter danger.
He asked the city for prayers and support. Law enforcement sources have identified the suspect in custody as Eric Lewis, an employee of the Philadelphia Water Department. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the identification based on anonymous sources. Police have not officially released the suspect’s name, and no charges have been publicly announced as of Saturday morning.
No verified public records detailing a prior criminal history, outstanding warrants, probation, or parole status for the suspect have been released by authorities in connection with this investigation. The sequence before officers arrived is still being pieced together. The initial call reported a man with a gun on the porch. What prompted that report, whether there was any prior interaction at the property, and the precise actions of the suspect in the minutes leading up to the officers’ arrival remain unclear.
Body camera footage has not been confirmed as publicly available or reviewed in detail by officials in statements released so far. The human cost is immediate and severe. A father of five and a father of two left their homes for a routine call and walked into a sustained attack. One family is now facing the permanent loss of a husband and parent.
The other is waiting through critical care after multiple gunshot wounds. The department and the city are mobilizing support while investigators continue to work the scene and the case. This remains a developing investigation. Officials have not released the names of the officers involved.
Charges against the suspect in custody have not been detailed. The full circumstances surrounding the initial call, the suspect’s actions with the recovered firearms, and any possible motive have not been established publicly. The most important unanswered question surrounding the shooting is what exactly occurred in the minutes before officers stepped onto that porch and why the response to a report of an armed man escalated so rapidly into a multi-round ambush that claimed one officer’s life and left another fighting for his.
