Two men who set out to rob a jewellery shop in Gujarat ended up dialling the emergency helpline themselves after alert residents locked them inside. The incident took place in the early hours at BJ Jewellers in Sanjan village under Umargam subdivision of Valsad district. Police identified the accused as Dinesh Sonkar aged 32 and Vipin Pathak aged 27. Both originally belong to Uttar Pradesh and have been living in the Palghar region of Maharashtra for the past few years.
Sonkar stayed in Boisar East while Pathak lived in Nalasopara East. According to investigators the pair travelled by train from Palghar to Umargam and then reached the market area in Sanjan. Around two in the morning they began cutting the lock on the shop shutter using a cutter. They repeatedly stepped back to avoid drawing attention.
A power outage in the locality that night had made residents more watchful. A friend of the shop owner Manish Sharma who lives nearby woke up and noticed the two men working on the shutter. He informed Sharma and hurried towards the shop. By the time he arrived the intruders had already entered.
The resident quickly pulled the shutter down from outside and raised an alarm. More people gathered within minutes. Trapped inside and hearing the growing crowd the two men feared they would be beaten. One of them Sonkar dialled the emergency number 112.
He told the operator that they had come to commit theft but people outside had pulled down the shutter and they needed to be rescued. The men later told police they were familiar with the same helpline from their time in Palghar and used it again in this situation. A 112 response team reached the location promptly. At that moment some residents were trying to force the shutter open with sticks.
Officers calmed the gathering opened the shutter and took both men into custody. Jewellery that the pair had collected inside the shop along with the tools they brought for the break in were recovered. Umargam police inspector H D Tuvar confirmed that the timely action by the resident who closed the shutter proved crucial. An FIR was registered on the complaint of the shop owner.
The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police are examining whether the two have any previous criminal record and plan to seek their custody for further questioning. The area around Sanjan sits near the borders of Gujarat Maharashtra and the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman. Officers note that such locations often attract criminals who try to slip across boundaries after committing offences.
In this case the quick response of local residents and the unusual decision of the suspects themselves to call for help brought the attempt to a swift end. Videos circulating after the incident show the two men being escorted out of the shop with their heads lowered. They appeared subdued as officers led them away.
The case stands as a clear example of community vigilance preventing a potential theft and of how fear of public anger can sometimes lead even those committing a crime to seek the protection of the law they intended to break. Further investigation continues to determine if the pair had targeted other shops in the region. For now the jewellery and tools have been seized and the accused remain in police custody.
